Technical Review Meeting for 450-Class PVC-O Pipes for Water Supply

2017-07-20

On July 7, 2016, the Science and Technology Promotion Center of the Ministry of Water Resources organized experts in Baoding, Hebei, to conduct a technical evaluation of the 450-grade impact- and compression-resistant biaxially oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVC-O) pipes developed by Hebei Wanfang Olive Plastic Pipe Industry Co., Ltd. for water supply applications.

The evaluation committee experts listened to a briefing on the development of this pipe material, reviewed relevant technical documentation, and conducted an on-site inspection of product samples and the production line. After thorough questioning and discussion, they concluded that the PVC-O pipe utilizes a unique manufacturing process involving both axial and radial stretching, which aligns the long-chain PVC molecules in a highly ordered, biaxially arranged structure. This innovative approach results in superior strength, toughness, and impact resistance compared to conventional PVC-U pipes, while also ensuring an exceptionally long service life—predicted by testing to exceed 50 years.

This product has been tested by the Chemical Building Materials Testing Center, and its technical performance meets the requirements of "Impact- and Compression-Resistant Biaxially Oriented Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC-O) Pipes and Fittings for Water Supply" (CJ/T445-2014/ISO16422:2006). Additionally, it has passed inspection by the Hebei Provincial Health Testing Center, confirming that its hygienic performance complies with the "Hygiene Evaluation Standard for Water Distribution Equipment and Protective Materials Used in Domestic Drinking Water Systems" (GB/T17219-1998), and has thus received Hebei Province’s hygiene approval.

In terms of technical performance, this product boasts high strength and, at the same pressure and with the same specifications, weighs only half as much as traditional PVC-U or PE pipes per meter. This significantly reduces material usage, sharply cuts energy consumption, minimizes carbon emissions, and promotes energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Currently, this product has been deployed in water supply projects across regions including Feicheng in Shandong, Luoyang in Henan, Shuangluan in Chengde, and Dingxi in Gansu. Approximately 500,000 linear meters of piping have already been laid. Thanks to its high strength, excellent quality, ease of installation, and low overall project costs, it has earned positive feedback from users.

The expert members of the evaluation committee believe that the Grade 450 PVC-O pipe material holds great potential for widespread application and promotion. At the same time, the experts recommend strengthening the ongoing monitoring, investigation, and evaluation of the actual performance of PVC-O pipes already in use.
